We're all trying to be more environmentally aware these days in our decorating choices. It can be relatively easy to do when we're shopping for some items. After all, organic fibers are clearly labeled when you're looking for upholstery fabrics and it's easy to understand what you're reading on those labels. Interiors paints are one of the most toxic products we use in our homes. When you open a can of paint, you'll be able to tell if it's got VOC's. If it has the harsh odors you remember from years past, it's potentially dangerous. Today's newer paints without volatile organic compounds don't have a strong odor to them. Of course, you should still paint only in a well ventilated room.
VOC's cause a variety of problems, including: damage to the ozone layer, irritation of the eyes and lungs, asthma and breathing problems, headaches and lung damage.
Decorating with No VOC Paints
Can you decorate with No VOC paints? Yes, beautifully! When paint manufacturers first began offering environmentally safe paints, many consumers hesitated to make the switch. They were afraid that the paints wouldn't hold their color or wouldn't hold up under the daily wear of family life. Fortunately, that's no longer true. Paint manufacturers have developed safe, non-toxic alternatives that prolong the life of paint without using VOC's.
There are some areas of your house where you may want to use low VOC paint rather than VOC-free paint if you are worried about durability. For instance, in your bathroom, where moisture will be a concern, choosing a low-VOC latex paint is a good trade-off. You can get the lasting durability you need and the paint will last for years, holding up to all the moisture. Not having to repaint every few years would be worth it in this case, since even no-VOC paints contain minor amounts of some chemicals.
