This year Toronto’s yearly exhibition of local talents called Come Up to My Room will feature souvenirs with a fresh twist.
Instead of purchasing a bland moose ornament, consumers can purchase a handmade silver antler ring by designer Anneke van Bommel. Rather than picking up another generic maple leaf cup, children can choose from a variety of Patty Johnson’s maple wood toys.
This new direction on a traditional souvenir shop is the brain child of Michael Erdmann and Todd Falkowsky. After seeing just how bland and stereotypical most Canadian gift shops truly were, they wanted to do something different and indeed they have.
Objects at this designer gift shop will still remain $20 or less but will have been created by tangible sources like students at the Ontario College of Art and Design as well as other top notch designers, making this modernized Canadian gift shop experience a little bit more personal and unique.
