On Independence Day 2005, architect/artist Fritz Haeg introduced the novel idea of making an entirely edible front lawn. The lawn was to be filled with plants native to the region and should be, as mentioned, completely available for human consumption.
Haeg’s first garden went up in Salina, KS followed by three more in Lakewood, CA; Maplewood, NJ and London, England making this more an international phenomenon than a simpleton’s idea.
Metropolis Books put together a description of the project titled Edible Estates: Attack on the Front Lawn filled with photos and accounts straight from Haeg and the home owner’s. The book not only promotes these literally delectable homes but shows the world that a green way of living is more within reach than they might think.
