New York City’s Museum of Modern Art proudly presented their plans for a 75 story residential skyscraper that is to be connected to the museum.
The blueprints also add another 50,000 square feet to the world famous museum. All they need to begin the glorious project is public approval.
New York Times’ architecture critic Nicolai Ouroussoff dubbed the plan as "the most exhilarating addition to the skyline in a generation;" a hopeful sign for MoMA’s project.
However, local residents didn’t quite echo MoMA and the Ourousoff’s sentiment.
Startlingly the public has taken it upon themselves to decide that building a high rise in a low rise area would be completely unacceptable. Shockingly, the Community Board 5 committee went along with the general public and voted against the new structure last week.
How a residential building full of priceless works of art is out of place in one of the largest cities in the world, which is already chock full of skyscrapers, we will never know. We’ll stick with MoMA on this one. After all, don’t they know that if MoMA ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy!
