Welling (welling.ai) is an AI-powered nutrition coaching app available on iOS and Android1. Built in Singapore by co-founders Philip Man and Irwin Billing2, it replaces the traditional calorie-counter workflow of searching food databases with a conversational interface: users snap a photo, type a description, or send a voice note, and Welling estimates calories and macros automatically1. The app reports a 4.8-star rating on the App Store and over 2 million food logs processed1.
What it does
Welling combines meal logging with ongoing AI coaching. The core loop works in four steps1:
- Set a strategy. Users choose weight loss, muscle gain, or maintenance. The app calculates personalized daily calorie and macro targets based on the user’s bio-data and goals3.
- Log meals. Describe a meal in chat, upload a photo, or scan a nutrition label. Welling estimates the calorie, protein, carb, fat, and fiber breakdown without manual database searching4.
- Get real-time coaching. The AI provides feedback on whether a meal fits the user’s daily targets, answers nutrition questions, and suggests meals that match remaining macros4.
- Review weekly insights. Weekly summaries show trends in intake, weight changes, and macro distribution to help users understand what is and isn’t working1.
Additional features include meal plan generation, recipe suggestions based on dietary preferences, Apple Health sync for activity data, and customizable allergy and intolerance settings34.
The app does not yet track micronutrients beyond fiber, fasting schedules, or hydration, though these are flagged as features under development4.
Pricing
Welling is free to download. The full AI coaching, chat logging, and photo logging features require a paid subscription after a free trial period4. Subscription pricing is managed through the iOS App Store and Google Play Store4.
Conversational tracking
What separates Welling from traditional calorie counters is the chat-first interface. Rather than scrolling through a food database, users type something like “chicken rice with broccoli and about 150g chicken” and the app logs the estimate4. Users can tap into any entry to adjust values if the estimate is off4.
In independent testing by reviewers, simple whole foods (chicken breast, rice, vegetables) logged reliably, while complex dishes and restaurant meals with unknown preparation produced estimates that could vary by 20 to 30 percent4. The app was noted for consistency: the same foods logged multiple times produced the same estimates4.
A particular strength is coverage of non-Western cuisines. “Obesity rates are rising in Asia, but the existing tools do not reflect how people eat here,” founder Philip Man told e272. Welling addresses this through region-specific datasets and culturally aware design, with early organic user growth concentrated in Singapore and Malaysia2.
Who it’s for
- People who have abandoned traditional food-logging apps because the data entry was too tedious4
- Working professionals and parents who want low-friction tracking2
- Users following weight loss, muscle gain, or maintenance programs who want AI coaching rather than just a database1
- People eating Asian, mixed, or family-style meals that confound Western-centric calorie trackers2
Welling is less suited to precision trackers who require gram-level accuracy or deep wearable integrations4.
